I bought the last two balloons. Fancy balloons –

I bought the last two balloons. Fancy balloons – Happy Birthday + colorful swirls printed on them.
•
Normally, I would buy a bunch of regular balloons to decorate the house, but the helium tank was broken.
•
I got the last two.
•
I was SO relieved.
•
He will feel celebrated. He will have balloons tied to his chair. We will place a candle in front of him + sing – I will take a picture.
•
Within 20 minutes of showing him the balloons, he sucks out the helium to hear his voice sound funny.
•
I had left the room.
•
Where are the balloons?
•
Oh, I sucked out the helium, he answers moving the headset off of one ear, shifting the microphone down off his mouth, + never taking his eyes off of the flat screen.
•
Really? I’m as deflated as the shell of the balloon on the ground by his dirty dishes….from 2 days ago.
•
Yeah. It was SO awesome. It was SO funny. Thank you SO much!
•
Then the blow up slide is delivered + set up on the side of our pool + he moves his body for six hours without pause.
•
No video games.
•
Also, no singing or candles or cake – because I don’t know…we have too many puppies.
•
It is the BEST day of his life.
•
There are no pictures of him with balloons.
•
But there is THIS picture (+ some others) – let the expression of this child interrupt your daily news feed + be reminded:

It’s fun concentrate – it’s a commitment to joy.

It’s a little brassy, still sweet. It’s innocent + curious. It’s willing + wanting to know more + it’s comfortable being right where it is. It’s the last pure look of who it is before it contends with who the world wants it to be.

Somewhere inside of you – inside each of us – is 11.
•
Let’s build on that.

What’s your version of sucking helium, cracking shields online with your friends, sliding into a cool pool of water with hopes of splashing the person who is telling you what to do, like smile for the camera? What’s your SO awesome?

This girl. It’s been a month since her passing.

This girl. It’s been a month since her passing. She is only a half of a thought away at any moment. You knew she would die this year – her body fading out – but still, every time you reach for your headphones to go for a walk, you expect her to jump up. You can HEAR her collar, her paws + pants + high-pitched pleading to accompany you.
•
You miss the way she hugged you w/ her forehead – the nudge of affection when she wanted to get in your lap.
•
She never did understand her size.
•
She used her strength effortlessly – her athleticism provided hours of entertainment. You loved to watch her wrestle w/Luca or just roll her back against the grass like a boss.
•
She preferred Boyd to you + that was all right. Because in the last third of her life, she won your heart – and she knew it.
•
That came after all of your threats to re-home her when the kids were little.
•
It was your fault.
•
You didn’t rightfully respect her territorial nature, her need to protect, her desire to prove her place in the world.
•
You could’ve been a better Alpha – you could’ve assured her.
•
It was love in the form of commitment, in the end, that she responded to the most.
•
“Love her more” became your mantra. The times when her behavior challenged you the most, you would go towards her. Give her more attention. Set her up for success. Praise the positive. Keep your nervous system calm around her – and she matched you.
•
Her aggression was always out of her sensitivity, her smarts, anyway.
•
So, you used the mantra.
•
She could feel it – because she loved you more.
•
She TAUGHT you love – like all the real relationships do.
•
This girl made you a multiple dog family – you will always be one. To witness the way she gave Luca a pack, to laugh in the joy of two-dog shenanigans, to surrender openly to her death – let her go without attachment.
•
She knows who is waiting on the Other Side – frozen in stalk-position, quiet paw, silent approach to swwooosshh – they run fields, dig holes, track squirrels, climb trees.
•
May we meet again, sweet Farley – where no leashes are needed + you can press your head against mine for the rest of eternity.
•

we are stronger together.
